Australian Citizenship

Permanent residency can be attained through many of the work in Australia visas offered in Australia and most of the family-sponsorship Australian visa categories. In order to obtain permanent residence in Australia the candidate must first of been living in Australia for a sustained period of time after immigrating to Australia.

Australian citizenship residency requirements:

Applicants for Australian citizenship will be required to be living in Australia as a permanent resident for a total of 3 years in the 5 years before making the Australian citizenship application. This includes a period of 1 year in the 2 years before the Australian citizenship application is made.
Those applying for permanent residency have usually been working in Australia on either a Family sponsored visa or Australia skilled independent  visa. These are the most common type of Australia visas used in citizenship applications.

Security

A new provision was drawn up amid security changes subsequent to the threat of terrorism from abroad, this prohibits the approval of an Australian citizenship application if that person is identified as a risk to Australia's security.
The prohibition applies to all applications including those for Australian citizenship by descent, Australian citizenship by conferral and applications for the resumption of Australian citizenship.

Revocation

Legislation in Australia enables the government to revoke a persons Australian citizenship if they have committed a serious offence at anytime prior to or after being approved to become an Australian citizen, and are convicted for 12 months or more for that offence.
