Finding Work in New Zealand
Newspapers
All the major daily newspapers have a Situations Vacant section that advertises job vacancies.
Wednesday and Saturday editions typically have the largest number of classifieds, however the NZ Herald also has a major employment section on a Monday.
Recruitment Agencies
Upon arrival in New Zealand, it is a good idea to register with an employment agency.
Jobseekers can find details of employment agencies under Employment Agencies or Personnel Consultants in the 'yellow pages' section of your telephone directory.
Private employment agencies are listed in the Yellow Pages telephone directory under 'Employment Services' and 'Employment - Labour Hire Contractors'.
Many employment agencies have websites which advertise vacancies. By registering with more than one agency jobseekers can increase their chances of finding work.
In almost all cases recruitment agencies provide their service for free.
Searching the internet for jobs
New Zealand has a number of job search websites that advertise job vacancies from around the country. Most websites also let jobseekers subscribe and receive email notices whenever jobs that match their particular criteria are listed. Some sites may also let jobseekers apply for certain vacancies online.
Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ)
The New Zealand Government's social security agency, Work and Income, provides free job-seeking services for unemployed residents.
WINZ can assist unemployed New Zealand residents with all aspects of finding a job, including job search preparation, careers advice, and support once a jobseeker gets a job. WINZ offices are throughout many city suburbs and major country centres.
Qualifications and skills
The job training market is competitive and some employers may not recognise overseas qualifications and training.
If your qualifications are not recognised, jobseekers may have to consider extra study or retraining to get the job they want.
Some occupations have special requirements. This may include registration or licensing with a government authority and/or membership of a professional or industry association. Find out further information on our Transport and Accommodation page.
